SWFL Birth Story

January 4, 2021

Jolie’s birth story begins in Spring 2020. Her mother, Jenny, contacted me soon after learning her and her husband were expecting a new someone! With this being their final pregnancy, she wanted to ensure her family was on my calendar for late December/early January. Having 3 sons in the house, Jenny was hoping she might meet their daughter.

I attended a home visit with Deborah Fuentes LM in early December. It was so nice to finally meet the Dieter family! Jenny and I discussed her birth vision, looked at birth photos and shopped online for wraps and bows while her sons shared their drawings with us.

At 6:30am on Monday, January 4, Jenny text me that she had woken up with contractions that felt different. Only 30 minutes later she messaged me that it was time to come! Her previous birth happened quickly and she felt this one would too.

I arrived at Jonathan and Jenny’s house around 7:45am. After being welcomed by Jenny’s mother, sister and two sons Jesse and Judd, I found Jenny laboring in the kitchen. The morning light falling perfectly across her chest and baby as she swayed through the pressure. Her floral robe danced in the sun while she paced between waves. It was baby time, and sooner than later…

As soon as the tub was ready Jenny eagerly eased herself in, instantly bringing on a wave of pressure. She soon found comfort by leaning over the side of the birth tub. Jonathan rubbed Jenny’s back while her sister dabbed a cold cloth on her neck and offered beautiful words of encouragement. Surrounded by love and support, Jenny slipped away. Letting each wave of pressure wash over and bring their baby down.

At 8:53am Jenny sits back and asks for help to the toilet…while crowning, Jenny makes her way back to the tub for some relief. Two minutes later Jolie’s head is born! However, without further progress the midwife requests that Jenny reposition to her hands and knees outside of the tub. With some assistance, Jolie is born at 8:59am! Welcomed in to Deborah’s hands and embraced by Jenny in the small open space between the bathroom and birth tub. Jolie’s moment of birth was recorded via video and is included in her birth film below.

Jonathan eases Jenny to a sitting position and the whole family comes close to meet their newest member. Not knowing if their baby is a boy or girl, they are content in this moment together. Soon, Jonathan and Jenny pull the towel back and announce “it’s a little girl!”

Less than half an hour old and the oxytocin is flowing. The tub is draining and the boys are helping Grandma make breakfast for the birth team. For a moment, it’s just the three of them.

Almost two hours have passed since Jolie arrived and she has only been held skin to skin by mom and dad. However, everyone is growing anxious to see how much Jolie weighs! After a family centered cord cutting we learned that she is 8lbs 15oz and 21.5in long. Jolie is then held by other family members and given all the love.

Thank you so much to the Dieter family for inviting me in to your home and sharing Jolie’s birth story with me!

Words from Jenny Dieter “For the third time, almost 6 weeks ago, I again embarked on the most remarkable journey of my life. In my opinion, natural unmedicated Childbirth is the epitome of “digging deep” to find unwavering strength and yet inner peace all at the same time. It requires a woman to trust her body, understanding that it knows just what to do when it needs to, all while working in conjunction with a precious child entering the world. It’s a beautiful mix of joy yet pain-with-a-purpose and has the outcome of epic proportions. I’ve never felt more alive nor more powerful than going through the experience of birthing my 3 precious babies. I truly felt like a warrior momma and am most proud of this accomplishment.”
